Pah! Mankind! A juggernaut of hate and lie ... is that what you fight for? Well, fight now and die for the sins of the people!
- Dracula to Jack Henry Dappen

Dracula (also known as Mathias Cronqvist or Vlad Ţepeş ) is the villain in Castlevania! He is the last boss in almost every game, except for the chronologically first and last two games of the series. It is loosely based on the character of the same name from Bram Stoker's Dracula and the historical character Vlad Tepes Draculea, called "the Impaler".

Forces and influenceBearbeiten

Count Dracula is an immortal vampire who has the rank of Dark Lord, who pulls on the forces of chaos, is looked up to be the King of the Night and is considered the embodiment of evil. Many weaker creatures of darkness and possessed humans are fanatically devoted to him, believing that he will cleanse the world of their stained status and bring a new world order. Their faith is so strong that even after the end of their regeneration cycle in 1999, they were sure that he would return when they called for him. Because of this devotion, Jack Henry Dappen accused him of stealing the souls of men and turning them into his slaves.
Dracula replied that the same could be said about all religions and further stated that Judge was only a slave to his faith and his God, as were many others. He also noted that it was not his choice to return, but that it was humans who called him back to the world of the living, when the power of Christ was weakened and many of them fell mad.

In some of the earlier concepts, such as the Japanese introduction to Akumajou Densetu ( Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse ), Dracula was an avid demon worshiper who sold his soul and that of his son, Alucard , to a demon in exchange for his power. This idea was never later taken up and is also in conflict, with later developments, so the origins of Dracula's powers in Lament of Innocence were explained and his son, Alucard, got his powers when his father was already a vampire, as in Symphony of the Night is explained.

Dracula zeige große Macht in seinen Kämpfen. Zu seinen Kräften gehören u.a.

GeschichteBearbeiten

ACHTUNG SPOILER!

1094: Ereignisse von Lament of InnocenceBearbeiten

LoI OST Mathias and Elizabetha

Dracula's armies had defeated all the armies the Orthodox Church opposed and taken many lands. One night, Isaac , a general in Dracula's army, reported that the Belmont family had launched an offensive to the west. Leader of this army was Trevor Belmont, who was planning an attack on Dracula's castle. Isaac asked for the opportunity to put himself in the way of Trevor. Instead, however, he was sent to find Hector , another general who was actually charged with killing Trevor, but he deserted. Dracula wanted to meet the Belmont himself and waited for him in his throne room.

Dracula finally fought the vampire hunter, who was supported by the rebel Grant DaNasty , the sorceress Sypha Belnades , and Alucard. With much effort, the vampire lord could finally be defeated. For the first time in hundreds of years, the immortal Dracula was finally dead, yet his campaign against humanity did not end. In his last breath he uttered a curse that rotted the land and poisoned the spirits of the inhabitants, who plundered and plundered it without remorse.

1479: Events of Curse of DarknessBearbeiten

A few years later in 1479, the Grim Reaper planned to revive the Earl by using the treacherous Hector as a container for Dracula. Only Devil Forgemasters, like Isaac and Hector, are infused with Dracula's magic, which is why only they represent suitable hosts for the count. However, they must be completely enveloped by Dracula's curse.

Although Hector was the ideal solution of the Reaper, he was able to resist the curse, forcing death to compromise and using Isaac instead. Isaac was killed in cold blood by Hector, and death used the body to revive the Earl, leading to the earliest return of the Earl of the Dead. However, as the revival was only partially successful, Hector was able to defeat both death and Dracula and send the latter back to his grave, as well as end the curse that held the country in its poisoned grip.

1576 - 1591: The legend of DraculaBearbeiten

A century later, Dracula returned. Since then, Dracula has awakened itself every 100 years, should it not have been revived before. With the power of Christ weakened every hundred years, the hearts of the people are governed by black and chaos. They try to revive Dracula so he can cleanse the world. So he returned in 1576 and since his castle was associated with his powers, this also returned.

Strengthened by his long sleep, the Earl resumed his plan to avenge humanity and attacked his hordes of Transylvania. Once again, the only ones who could face him and his entourage were the Belmont family with their sacred whip, the vampire killer. Christopher Belmont invaded Castlevania and he and the count fought each other to the death. Christopher thought he had sent the count to the grave, but this turned into fog and feigned his death only. With his lock destroyed and himself too weak from battle to recover his actual form, he waited for the right moment to strike back at the Belmonts, the family that had caused him so much trouble.

Dracula reappeared 15 years later in 1591, when he magically influenced Christopher's son, Soleiyu , still trapped in mist form . He planned to use the Belmont to regain his composure and placed a curse on the young vampire hunter who persuaded Soleiyu to obey his orders. Christopher Belmont set out to help his son and was forced to fight him. He defeated Soleiyu and managed to remove the curse from him. During this time, Dracula used the energy of four elemental castles and he became complete again. Christopher and he fought one another and last time against each other. Christopher was victorious and destroyed Dracula and sent him to sleep for the next 100 years.

1691 - 1698: The damned sealBearbeiten

Dracula returned in an Easter Vigil in 1691, when his followers in an old monastery held an unholy ritual to bring him and his castle back to plunge humanity into darkness and despair. Dracula was defeated by Simon Belmont , but not without being able to summon a critical hit on Simon's back and then speak a curse. Similar to 1476, when he was defeated by Trevor, the Earl left a curse before he died.

Although dead, he left both Transylvania and Simon Belmont in a bad state. The only way to break the curse was to collect Dracula's remains and revive him in the ruins of Castlevania, to defeat him there and then burn his remains. Dracula's followers could rule freely over many territories while the land was cursed and they hid the count's remains in heavily guarded castles and mansions. The weakened Simon Belmont, however, managed to collect all the pieces in 1698 and bring them back to Dracula's castle. Again he had to defeat him, but this time he made it and freed both himself and the country from the curse.

1748: Events of Castlevania: Harmony of DissonanceBearbeiten

Dracula's remains once again wreaked havoc when a young vampire hunter named Maxim Kischine went in search of them to prove himself a hunter. He was jealous of the status the Belmont clan had and wanted to prove he was stronger than them by finding Dracula's remains. Like Simon Belmont 15 years earlier, Maxim was able to collect all the pieces in 1748, but possession of Dracula's body parts divided Maxim's mind into two parts, one of which was thoroughly evil.

Since Dracula was partly returned by Maxim back to the world, Castlevania reappeared. However, the castle was not complete because the evil spirit had no full control over Maxim. So one part was on the earth, the other still in the spiritual world. Dark Maxim and normal Maxim struggled for control of hers, because if the dark part were to win, the entire castle would reappear.

Death saw a remedy for that in Lydie Erlanger , a virgin whom Maxim was watching. If the dark Maxim sacrifices the Blood of the Virgin, that would give him the strength he needs to overwhelm the normal Maxim. However, the conspiracy of death was thwarted by Juste Belmont , the grandson of Simon Belmont, who expelled the evil spirits from Maxim by bringing Dracula's remains together. The mind was pulled into the remains, breaking away from Maxim's body and then materializing as Dracula's phantom. Juste defeated the ghost, making fun of the Belmonts' job, that it was in vain that Dracula would always return and they were damned to chase him to eternity.

1792 - 1797: The Dracula X ChroniclesBearbeiten

Dracula woke again in 1792, 100 years after he was defeated by Simon Belmont. He was brought back to life by the zealous dark priest Shaft and his religious community, sacrificing a virgin. Upon his return, he sent his henchmen to plunder the land. They abducted young women from the villages. One of them was Annette, the girlfriend of Jack Henry Dappen The Count felt the connection she had with his mortal archenemy, Belmonts. He was captivated by her beauty and offered her immortality as a vampire to rule the world by his side. But she refused and said she would rather die than be with him.
Jack Henry Dappen rescued all the girls and defeated the count. This time, however, Dracula was amused by the never-ending cycle he shared with the Belmonts. He knew he would return, so he was not dismayed because of his defeat Jack Henry Dappen told him that he had no place in this world, but Dracula replied that it is not his choice that he always returns. He would come back because of the will of the people who call for him. That's why he asked Jack,Dappen, if he could really be called evil. When he broke up, he laughed at Jack, fully aware that he would come back and that the hunt for Belmonte was in vain.

Despite his defeat, Dracula returned only five years later, in 1797. The spirit of the dark priest Shaft, who was actually killed by Jack, made this possible. This time, it was his son Alucard, who got up from his sleep, who stood up to him. Dracula was a little shocked to see his son again, and unchecked he tried to convince him to see things from his point of view. He was upset that Alucard was still on the side of humans, despite what they had done. He wanted to know from Alucard if he had forgotten what the people did to his mother, Lisa. Alucard replied that he would never forget such an atrocity, but unlike his father, he does not long for revenge against her because it is not what his mother wanted.

Alucard told Dracula that he could not allow him to continue to be a plague to humanity and the two began to fight. Because Dracula's resurrection was not complete yet, he was defeated by his son. At the end of the fight, Dracula put everything aside and just wanted to know from Alucard what Lisa's last words were. Alucard told his father that she said that people should not be hated. That if he could not live with them, he should not hurt them at least. And she told Alucard to tell his father that he would love forever and ever. For the first time, for several hundreds of years, Dracula showed regret for his actions. He asked Lisa to forgive him his sins and said goodbye to his son,

Events of Castlevania: Order of EcclesiaBearbeiten

Dracula returned sometime in the 1800s. After 1797 the name Belmont disappeared without a trace and other organizations stepped forward, hoping to keep Dracula and his followers back, instead of the Belmonts. The most successful group was Ecclesia, who made a breakthrough with Barclea , the leader of Ecclesia, through the creation of glyphs, symbols that harnessed the forces in all things and are thus used by the members of Ecclesia in combat could.

Due to the success of Ecclesia, people in positions of power entrusted to them Dracula's remains so that they could destroy and hopefully put an end to the plague. Barlowe developed from these remains the ultimate glyph, Dominus. Barlowe claimed that Dominus would destroy the Dark Lord, but in truth, the real purpose behind Ecclesia was to fulfill the desire of humanity, which in Barlowe's eyes was to revive the Earl. Barlowe's plan was to use Dominus to destroy the seal on the remnants that kept Dracula from reviving. Barlowe needed someone to be the landlord for Dominus and he chose his student Shanoa who was unaware of the true intentions of Ecclesia and who did not know that the use of Dominus would cost her life. However, Shanoa found out the truth and defeated Barlow. The remnants of Dracula, however, pumped a great deal of energy into Barlowe, who was now able to reawaken Dracula at the expense of his own life. After Barlowe sacrificed his life, the Dark Lord and his castle returned.

Shanoa then infiltrated Castlevania and fought his way to the throne room where Dracula ruled his castle. Dracula thought for a moment that it was Shanoa who brought him back to life and offered to ask her if she wanted eternal life at his side, as a thank you for reviving him. However, Shanoa told the count that she was here to destroy him. Dracula was amused by her answer and was pleased with her challenge by telling her that he had not danced for a while. Shanoa's own strength was not enough to defeat the count, but when she used Dominus, whom she still carried with her, much to the count's surprise, she was able to defeat and kill him with his own power.

1820 - 1852: repeated reawakeningBearbeiten

In 1820, Dracula was revived again, but could be sealed by Morris Baldwin and prosperity was secured for the next ten years. Then, however, Carmilla awoke from her sleep and sensed that it was time to help the Earl at his resurrection. She was preparing a ritual in an old Austrian castle to break the seal on her master. After listening, Morris hurried with his two students, his son Hugh Baldwin and Nathan Graves, immediately to Carmilla's Castle, where they met the reawakened Vampire Lord. Dracula immediately recognized Morris as one of those who sealed the seal to him ten years ago and separated Hugh and Nathan from him by plunging them into the caves deep below the castle. Dracula now planned to soak up Morris life to regain his full strength, but he had to wait for the full moon to complete the ritual.

Determined to save his master, Nathan reached the throne room and was able to save the old vampire hunter. Hugh quickly got his father to safety as Hugh confronted the count. When the fight came to an end, it was Nathan who emerged victorious.

In 1844, Dracula's followers planned to revive him once more by sacrificing a virgin and spilling their blood over his remains. This time, the werewolf Cornell fought against Dracula, whose sister was used as bait to lure him into the castle, as they actually wanted his powers.

After Dracula is defeated, he tries to drag Cornell's sister with him as the last act of revenge. Cornell used all his powers and sacrificed his wolf form to destroy the crystal and save his sister. The wolf spirit, however, was what Dracula really wanted and he joyfully used his strength to plan his next plot.

By using Cornell's wolf spirit, Dracula could survive, but he had to take the form of a child because he was not fully recovered. He gave himself the name Malus and acted as if he had been abducted so he could get closer to the vampire hunters who opposed him, Reinhardt Schneider and Carrie Fernandez . The vampire pretended to be hunted by a monster from whom Reinhardt rescued him and for this act, Malus thanked him.

Malus crept on as he behaved more and more suspiciously, playing cat-and-mouse with the young heroes. After many obstacles Reinhardt and Carrie reached the castle tower. Dracula appeared behind them and began to attack them, but lost. The two escaped from the collapsing castle and met there on Malus. He revealed that he himself is Dracula and that the vampire they were fighting for before was his servant, Gilles de Rais .

The three fought with each other and Dracula was forced to his knees and turned into fog. Malus suddenly reappeared claiming to have been obsessed. Before Reinhardt and Carrie could approach him, he was struck by holy water that devoured his flesh. It was Charles Vincent who had come to their aid and explained that the childlike look was just a trick from Dracula.

His plan was thwarted again, but the Dark Lord used his remaining power to teleport Reinhardt and Carrie to another realm and turned himself into a giant demon. But despite his best efforts, he was again defeated and his plan crossed.

1917 - 1944: The World WarsBearbeiten

Dracula was later revived by strangers before the events of Bram Stoker's Dracula. During this time he traveled to London, where he came into conflict with Abraham Van Helsing, to be then destroyed in 1897 by Quincey Morris.

Quincey's son, John Morris , confronted Dracula, along with Eric Lecarde , during World War I when he was revived by the efforts of his niece, Elizabeth Bartley and her accomplice, Drolta Tzuentes . Elizbaeth had the crown prince of Austria murdered, which led to the outbreak of the First World War. She planned to use the souls of the millions of dead to revive her uncle.
The revival ritual led the two women across Europe, and each step was followed by the two vampire hunters John and Eric. John Morris, also owned the Belmonts family whip, was the vampire killer. The hunt ended in Elizabeth's Castle in England, where she and Drolta succeeded in reviving Dracula. But Dracula was only alive again for a short while as John and Eric managed to kill Elizabeth, Drolta and him as well. But John paid a high price, because he had to let his life by the forces of the vampire killer whip itself, since he was not a direct descendant of the Belmonts.

In 1944, Dracula was revived by the vampire Brauner , in combination with the unprecedented status of despair during the Second World War. Brauner, who had lost his daughters during the First World War, wanted revenge on humanity and planned to use Dracula's forces for it. Brown, however, sealed Dracula, since his only desire was the power of Castlevania and control of the legions of monsters. He never intended to serve Dracula.

Braun used images he drew that were flooded with magic to control the castle. Jonathan Morris , son of John Morris and current owner of the Vampire Killer Whip, and his best friend, a sorceress named Charlotte Aulin, were sent by the church to investigate the castle. After Charlotte understood the pictures, they were able to enter the pictures and defeat the evil in them, which weakened Brauner. Jonathan and Charlotte defeated Brauner, but the vampire was finally brought down by the Grim Reaper. The death of Brauner solved the seal that Brauner used to prevent Dracula's return. So it was once again possible for the count to return to regain power over the castle. Jonathan, who had learned to harness the full power of the whip without giving his life, now had the power to subdue him, and just as he forced him into it, the first rays of sunlight came through the window and defeated the Dark Lord ,

1999: Demon Castle War'Bearbeiten

The last and final revival of Dracula took place in 1999. He launched another vicious campaign and destroyed all humanity. But he was defeated by Julius Belmont , the first Belmont for over 200 years, a Hakuba priest, Alucard and a Belnades and his body was finally destroyed. In addition, a ceremony was held in which his forces and the castle were sealed in a solar eclipse, so that Dracula's return ended for good .... or not, because although the circle of Vlad Tepes, or Mathias Cronqvist ended with, the legacy of Dracula continued to live, Reborn as Soma Cruz .

Draculas Sohn Bearbeiten

Through his connection with the human woman Lisa , Dracula has a son, named Adrian Fahrenheit Tepes , who later called himself Alucard . Despite the fact that he imitated his father in his early life, he later decided that he did not want to step into the evil tracks of Dracula and fought him many times. It is said that he chose the anagram "Alucard" ("Dracula" backwards) as his new name because of the symbolic gesture that he would act unlike his father from that point on, like an "anti-Dracula".

When exactly Dracula became a father or when he met Lisa is not clear. In any case, it happened before the events of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.

And even if Alucard fights against his father, his father loves him and is very proud of him.

reincarnationBearbeiten

Caos-soma-cruz2

Soma Cruz in 2035

In Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow , we learn that Soma Cruz is a reincarnation of Dracula. In 1999 , Julius Belmont was finally able to defeat Dracula forever and seal the castle in a solar eclipse. But that was not the end of Dracula, as his soul was reborn in the young innocent man Soma Cruz.

He not only has many of Dracula's powers, Soma also bears a strong resemblance to Mathias Cronqvist. It is also interesting that Mathias was mostly black and was wrapped in a red aura, while Soma mostly wears white and is enveloped in a blue aura. It seems that Soma is something of a second chance for Mathias, in which he has the opportunity to take a different path, after he finds out that he is a reincarnation of Dracula.

Soma is both a character and a continuation of Dracula, but as a reincarnation and protagonist. However, fans are debating whether it is really the same person in a new life, or a completely different person who has inherited only Dracula's powers.
